Every parent dreams of their child wanting to pick up a mop or toilet brush to scrub things clean. Or even just want to clean up their own room. This past week on vacation, many of my dreams came true!
My eight year old, Dylan is a very goal-oriented boy who needs and welcomes a daily plan of things to do. So on the first weekday of vacation, when I knew we had to do errands and I needed to do things around the house, I came up with a quick 9 box grid filled with things that I wanted him to accomplish throughout the day. I explained, when he completed everything, he would be awarded $3.00 to be put into his vacation souvenir fund and one special item to be given in the car for our upcoming car trip. When I presented this to him, he and his brother were playing wii. He immediately jumped up, rant to shut off the TV and told his brother ‘Let’s go!’
He completed the list very quickly and was quite proud. He asked me if we could do this everyday. And then he asked me if he could mop the floor. How could I refuse that?! Trying to hide my excitement, I told him I would add it to his chart for the following day.
