Going on a day trip is a great way to spend time with family! Packing up and hitting the road. Setting your sights on a destination within 1-2 hours of where you live. Living in New England, there are plenty to see and do! Before heading out though, I always check the following sites and deals below to see if I am able to save money on the admission price. Between gas money, snacks and admission prices, day trips cost can add up! Here are some ways to save money before you head out the door!
You may have heard of Groupon but did you know this is definitely a website you should visit before heading out the door? Just do a quick search on either the destination or type of activities. Groupon has many fun things to do and by purchasing now, it can save you money on the price of admission. Just be sure to check the expiration date. However, take comfort in knowing that if something comes up and prevents you from going before it expires, you can still use the purchased price amount towards the activity you purchased the Groupon for. Check Groupon’s FAQs for more details
Breathe New Hampshire
A coupon book you may not have heard of but definitely one you will want to get if you do road trips around New England. Per their website, Breathe New Hampshire is committed to eliminating lung disease and improving the quality of life for those living with lung disease. This non-profit puts together the yearly ‘Fun Pass” coupon book filled with fun destinations within New England. For more detailed information see Fun Pass...Your Pass to the Best Values in New England.
Many amusement park type places have deals if you go to their website before you show up at their door and pre-purchase your tickets, they will give you a discount. For example, Storyland in Glen, NH gives you $4.00 off a ticket. Six Flags of New England, at the time of this being published, is giving $20 off a regular ticket if you purchase it in advance! Definitely head over to the website of whatever place you are going to visit and check their ticket prices to see if they offer a pre-purchase discount. It’s a great way to save!
Free Fun Fridays
If you’re not familiar with Free Fun Fridays from The Highland Street Foundation of Newton, MA, then it is time to learn about it! Per their website, “This program was created to increase access and enrichment opportunities for children and families throughout Massachusetts during the summer months.” This program gives free admission to anyone on specific Fridays to specific places. You do not have to be a Massachusetts resident to take advantage of the Free Fun Fridays! Everyone and from everywhere is invited to participate. Can’t beat free! Free Fun Fridays is during the summer months. This year will be their tenth year of Free Fun Fridays. They will be offering ten weeks showcasing 100 free activities. They will be releasing their schedule in early May. Check back to see which Friday has your favorite activity or plan to visit someplace you’ve never been!
Annual or Season Pass
Many places will give you a significant discount if you purchase an annual or seasonal pass. Pay once and go all season or year depending on the pass type! Also some places such as museums have a benefit that if you purchase an annual pass, you also get admission into other museums. One of my favorite examples of this is if you buy an annual pass to the Worcester Ecotarium, did you know you can then get into the Boston Science Museum Exhibit hall for free as well as admission to the Children’s Museum in Dover, NH. Enjoy free or reduced admission to more than 350 msuems in the ASTC passport program. Other places offer free buddy passes or discount for friends to come with you.
Friends of the Library
Libraries often provide passes to museums and other places of interest for families who are members of the library. Check with your library to find out what museums or other fun places they have passes to and to find out how to reserve them for a specific day. Most libraries only let you keep the pass for a day (and sometimes charge money if the pass is late), so be sure to check the specifics before taking the library passes home.
If you have a few friends and their kids that are also interested in going somewhere, it’s definitely worth it to call ahead of time and find out how many have to be in your group to get a discount. The MOMS Club that I am belong to gets awesome deals when we take advantage of group discounts. We’ve gotten significant discounts on admission to the Southwick Zoo as well as a Worcester Railers hockey game by participating in the group discount.
Taking a day trip is such a fun and exciting time for you and your family. With a little advanced planning, you can save money on the cost of admission on many popular and fun things to do!
