In our home, Play-doh has always been a favorite but recently, we have discovered what my son calls ‘Squishy Sand’. You may have seen it called Magnetic or Kinetic sand. Whichever name you call, it’s an awesome sensory product and in this house, it is definitely a favorite toy!
When my younger son was four years old, I got an excellent lightening deal from Amazon.com. It was for a small adventure sandbox . My original idea was for him to be able to play with the Kinetic Sand in the house and yet be able to keep it contained. It worked wonderful as an inside toys until on Spring day, he asked if I could put it outside. Thinking what a clever idea so we could enjoy a little outside time, I moved the sand box to our backyard. Tyler wasted no time dumping all his “guys” into the sand as well as himself. He loved not only role-playing with the action figures, but he also had me playing along to ‘which guy is hiding and where is he hiding?’ A game he made up himself.
When he seemed to be losing interest, I told him it was time to give his action figures a bath after playing in the sand. I filled a bowl up of warm water and he loved washing all the sand off of each of his guys. We played this outside game for over an hour! It was a lot of fun! And I even got a few sips of my coffee! Total win!
Since that day, we have added onto our collection of magnetic sand. My four-year old, now 6, has outgrown the small sandbox but has not outgrown playing with magnetic sand. I keep the sand in a hinged-cover plastic container for easy access and easy clean up.
I also purchased a bunch of 3D Dough molds for the sand as well to help assist with making sand castles and creatures.
