As summer nears and my kids are finishing up the school year, we start thinking of all the exciting and fun things we are going to do this summer. We grab a big piece of paper and have a brainstorming session where we just throw out all kinds of fun ideas!  "S'mores over a campfire!" "See the stars after midnight!" "Go Mini-golfing!" "Go swimming!" "Ohhh bowling!" "Make paint chalk!" "Tie-Dye T-Shirts!" "Wear Pajamas and eat pancakes all day!" "Water park!" "Trampoline place!"

We write them all down and hang it on the wall.  The kids are excited, thinking 'best summer ever!'

And I'm left feeling overwhelmed and thinking 'wow, when are I am going to fit all these things in!'

    Summer ideas

Anyone else have a summer bucket list brainstorming session like this? Of course you do! We have to make the plans.  Summer ideas have to be created. We all want to experience summer as much as possible! I know. I get it! We do it too. And then as summer goes on, a few of the items on our list get crossed off, but not all of them. It's a lot and it's hard to keep track of everything!

After, we posted up our summer bucket list,  I start scouring my Pinterest and found so many awesome summer activity ideas, things to make and do. But then I was thinking 'Wow this one sounds so fun..' and 'oh...look at this one! It sounds even more fun to do!'

Which one should we do first and I don't want to purchase a ton of crap from a craft store only to find out we never use it. It's happens every summer!

    A better way

Right?! What if, we only had to think of summer one week at a time?  What kind of bucket list would that be?  As we know, bucket lists are basically wish lists.  All the things we would love to get to this summer but we may, or may not.

Sooo... I started brainstorming ideas on how to simplify summer planning.

Here it is! I hit up Canva and created a printable where my kids could come up with some fun ideas for each category.  A fun snack, exploring, nature, play and a few more.  I had to also throw in reading to keep up with summer reading for school as well as an activity to pay it forward.  I presented it to my seven-year-old this morning and he loved it.  We sat and he went through all the different categories and together we filled it in together.  Okay, well, he filled most of it in himself. I love his take on the categories.

    Summer planner tips

    • Print out one for each child and let them have it coming up with ideas you may not have even thought of yet!
    • Print out one and work on it together
    • Laminate it and using a washable marker, you can use it over and over again every week.
    • After completing each box, let your child cross it off to signify completion.

Remember, this is a bucket list, a wish list of ideas that your child would like to do with you for one week.  Make it fun! Get excited about summer fun. With a little planning each week, summer fun doesn't have to be overwhelming.
